MSU Hosts a Collegiate Recovery Community Panel

Earlier this summer MSU hosted a collegiate recovery community panel at a luncheon sponsered by Cumberland Heights. Representatives of University of Alabama, Kennesaw State University, University of Mississippi, and University of Southern Mississippi attended and discussed the Collegiate Recovery Communities at their schools. After lunch Amy Fisher, Substance Abuse Services Coordinator for the University of Mississippi, and Teresa Johnston, Director of the Collegiate Recovery Center for Kennesaw State University, gave a presentation about what Collegiate Recovery Communities are and how they have affected the schools that have them. Then the floor was open for the participating schools to talk about how each school started their Collegiate Recovery Community and how it operates. The meeting ended with Mississippi State University asking the Panel any questions they had. The panel members were Greg Snodgrass, Collegiate Recovery Center at the University of Alabama, Teresa Johnston, Director of the Collegiate Recovery Center for Kennesaw State University, a Collegiate Recovery Student at Kennesaw State University, Amy Fisher, Substance Abuse Services Coordinator for the University of Mississippi, Deena Crawford, Director of Student Counseling Services at the University of Southern Mississippi, and Jodi Ryder, Health Educator for Student Health Services CRC initiative at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Recovery Community in the News

The Recovery Community has had articles and broadcasts made about it in the Clarion-Ledger, MPB News, and University Communications. The articles talked about how the Recovery Community started and what it does for the students. Some of the recovery students took part in interviews with the reporters. See our News tab for links to articles.

If You Build It They Will Come – CRC Conference in Washington, DC

When people think about college one of the first thoughts is about parties and drinking. It has become common for many students to experiment large amounts of alcohol during their four years of college. Living in a community where such high-risk drinking is encouraged, staying free from alcohol and finishing school is difficult. The Department of Education is hosting a conference August 2 & 3 to bring schools together and teach them how to help students suffering from alcohol addiction. Those attending will learn skills that will help them to start recovery programs or strengthen programs they already have. Our very own Amy Fisher has been asked to be a part of the planning committee.
